Registering for a Quebec IFTA license

Everything you need to know to get your Quebec IFTA license.

Do you have to register for IFTA in Ontario?

If you were wondering whether or not you’re exempt, know that you must register and file for IFTA if you have:

  • Any vehicle with two axles and a gross vehicle weight of over 11,797 kilograms or 26,000 pounds
  • A vehicle of any weight but with three or more axles
  • A vehicle that exceeds 11,797 kilograms or 26,000 pounds

Now, let’s get into the steps you need to take in order to register for an Quebec IFTA license.

How to register for an IFTA license in Ontario

In order to do business in Quebec, your business must be registered with Revenu Québec and it must meet its obligations regarding consumption taxes. If you carry on commercial activities in Québec and your business income and the business income of your associates exceeds $30,000, you must register for the GST/HST and QST. You can register by: 

  • using either of the following online services:
  • calling Revenue Quebec’s client services;
  • filing form LM-1-V, Application for Registration.

Cost of the Quebec IFTA license

There is a $53.75 annual license charge and a $10.80 fee for each par of decals. Each qualified vehicle is required to have one decal on both sides of the cab.

Filing your quarterly IFTA return

You must file your quarterly return by:

NoteYou have to file a return even if you did not make any trips outside Québec or any trips during the quarter.

 

You must file a quarterly return every quarter:

  • January 1 to March 31
  • April 1 to June 30
  • July 1 to September 30
  • October 1 to December 31

You must file your return no later than the last day of the month following the end of the quarter in question. For example, your return for the period from January to March must be filed by April 30.

You can pay through your financial institution (bank) online

in person at the bank, or by mail.

Renewing your IFTA license in Ontario

Prior to the end of the year, a renewal application will be issued automatically to eligible IFTA licensees, so just make sure to watch out for that in the mail.

Watch out for these penalties

The following are considered penalties: 

  • failure to file fuel tax returns regarding the fuel used for travelling through all jurisdictions that are members under the Agreement; 
  • failure to file returns by the prescribed deadline; 
  • failure to pay the balance of tax due in full.

The penalty is equal to $50 or 10% of the unpaid taxes, whichever is greater.

Quebec IFTA Exemptions

If you obtain Certificate for Occassional Trips, you do not need a Quebec IFTA license.

This only makes sense to do if your trucks rarely make any trips outside of Quebec, as you must obtain one before every trip and keep it in your vehicle.
